Names On Starbucks Cups is a collection of Starbucks cups signed (often incorrectly) with my name, Nobu, by baristas at various Starbucks locations.
In this work, I turn my position as a passive consumer into active producer of artwork by using the Starbucks’s system of asking names of customers as my system to create my work. I also question the authorship of artwork and explore a new kind of collaboration. Is the barista who writes my name the maker of artwork? Is he or she my collaborator even though he or she is not aware of his or her participation in making the artwork? The feeling of collaboration exists only in me.
